This Is War–Part 1

We are in a war. Satan is our enemy.

1 Peter 5:8–Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about, like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

Battling against the prey of our soul can leave us feeling faint and weary. I believe this is because we don’t always use the right weapons in this epic fight of life. The Bible makes it clear that our battle is not against the people or things we see, but that it is a spiritual battle against dark and unseen forces.

Ephesians 6:12–For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

If we are fighting forces we cannot see, then the appropriate weapons for this battle must be unseen as well–spiritual weapons.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5– For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

This scripture confirms that our war is not against the people who hurt us, betray us, persecute us, or lie to us. Nor are our weapons vengeance or slander or guns. No! Our war is against satan and his demons who influence people to do dark things; therefore, we must use weapons that can defeat this enemy. These are unseen weapons that are mighty in God! While it can be difficult to fathom such a war, we can rest assured that not only is it real, but that God has greatly equipped us to overcome!

The children of God must learn to fight right! We must learn who we are in Christ and come to the realization that the enemy does not have the right to harass and torment us with anxiety, fear, depression, rage, anger, bitterness, or any other work of darkness.

Luke 10:19–Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Jesus granted us real authority that we have a right to use when we are born again into the family of God! God has not only given us the right to fight, but he has given us the tools.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

God has given us a whole armor to protect us from the schemes of the enemy! While truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation shield and protect us, our weapon–the sword of the Spirit–is the word of God. If we are to wield this most powerful weapon to defeat our enemy, we must meditate on it day and night so that it will become a part of who we are. Once His word is in us, we have a constant weapon to fight the enemy with, putting an end to all of the work of darkness in our lives.

I encourage you to meditate on His word as often as you can so that you will always have your sword readily available to swing at the one who seeks to devour you. In Part 2, I will share with you two dreams in which I battled the enemy. Until then, keep fighting the good fight of faith in this war against your soul. Our victory is in Jesus and His precious word!
